Coniston from Manchester

Coniston

Sometimes the best weekends don't need much of a plan.

Not every weekend has to be filled.

Sometimes all you need is a place where your phone spends more time in your pocket than your hand.

Coniston has a way of slowing everything down. Mornings begin quietly, with mist lifting from the lake and the first coffee of the day. Walks take longer than expected because there's no reason to hurry. Lunch stretches into the afternoon. One drink becomes two.

You don't have to climb the Old Man to enjoy being here, although it's there if you feel like it. Equally rewarding is wandering the lakeshore, finding a bench with a view, or spending an hour in a café watching the weather roll across the fells.

The best weekends often leave the smallest footprint.

You won't come home with hundreds of photos.

Just the feeling that time moved a little differently.

If you go...

Stay

A small inn, a cottage or somewhere you can hear the rain on the windows.

Walk

Around Coniston Water, Tarn Hows or whichever path looks inviting.

Eat

Somewhere that doesn't mind muddy boots.

Take

A book.

A flask.

A waterproof.

Leave plenty of room for doing nothing.
