What is Balnakeil?
Balnakeil creates sustainable outdoor clothing for urban adventurers who refuse to choose between city sophistication and wild authenticity. We design gear that moves seamlessly from street to summit, supporting grassroots communities in wild places across Scotland and the UK. We believe the wild isn't just a place you visit—it's part of who you are.
What does "Balnakeil" mean?
Balnakeil comes from the Gaelic 'Baile na Cille', meaning 'town of the church'. It's a remote village on Scotland's far northwest coast, where rugged beauty meets endless horizons—perfectly capturing our philosophy of finding extraordinary moments in unexpected places.
Who founded Balnakeil and why?
Our founder Matt created Balnakeil after years of escaping from city life to explore Scotland's wild coastlines and Highland peaks. He wanted to create a bridge between urban living and those transformative moments in nature—gear that understands you live between worlds and clothing that moves with you on every adventure.

Which train? Will it rain? Can drinks become dinner? Will I make the school run? What should I pack?
We don't think getting dressed should be another one.
We started Balnakeil because we believe life feels better when more of it happens outside. Not because every weekend is an adventure, but because the small moments often matter most. A walk before work. Lunch in the park. Taking the long way home. A weekend by the coast. Time to slow down, even if only for half an hour.
The trouble is, modern wardrobes aren't designed for modern life. We fill them with clothes for different versions of ourselves. Work clothes. Weekend clothes. Outdoor clothes. Holiday clothes. Yet most of us simply move between meetings, errands, friends, family and the outdoors in the same day.
We think there is a better way.
Our story
Balnakeil began with a simple realisation.
Like many people, our founder Matt found himself spending more time thinking about escaping modern life than actually stepping outside.
Regular trips to the north-west Highlands of Scotland became a reminder of something easy to forget: fresh air, changing weather and time outdoors don't have to be extraordinary to change how a day feels.
Back home, another frustration became obvious.
The clothing that performed well in the Highlands often felt too technical for everyday life. The clothing that looked good in everyday life often struggled with British weather.
There was a gap between the two.
Balnakeil was created to bridge it.
Not to help people climb higher mountains, but to help them say yes more often to the everyday moments outside that make modern life feel a little lighter.
